Dennis spent 30 years teaching in Oelwein at the middle and high schools. After retirement in 2004, he set up his own art studio where he specializes in pottery. In addition to his wide variety of original sculptures, bowls, pitchers, vases, mugs, and glasses, you will find many raku pottery items created by Dennis. Raku pottery is created with a special ceramic firing process that uses both fire and smoke to create unique patterns and designs. Dennis creates his raku in a special outdoor kiln at his studio. He places bisque fired pottery in the kiln for a short time, then removes the pottery and places it in a can of combustible materials where the heat from the pottery causes these materials to catch fire. While sealed in the can, oxygen is drawn out of the pottery and its glaze creating the unique and unpredictable colors and patterns that characterize raku.
